Sometimes I wonder; Do I paint my own retina to fall asleep - and wake up - to...?

"When the soul wishes to experience something she throws an image of the experience out before her and enters into her own image."

Encounters between artist souls
Soul, dreams and inspiration
The idea came when she was invited for a one-person show at Utne. The result became meetings - encounters - between artist souls, dreams, inspiration, and landscapes of two countries.

Tone Aanderaa accentuates that it is twenty years since her debut at the Folkemuseum at Utne. Together with five artist friends from Belgium she fills the grand hall of Utne. Simultaenously some of her new works are also exhibited at Hardanger Kulturgalleri at Mælen, where she is joined by six colleagues from Harding Puls. They will also exhibit in Belgium this autumn.
In this way Aanderaa is creating a creative meeting place where inspiration travels between countries, landscapes and artists. Hopefully this is the start of a process.
The goal is that these encounters will evolve further. More exhibitions of the "encounter" kind, with other artists from the Be-Ne-Lux countries coming to Hardanger, more Harding-Puls artists travelling there. Contacts can be made, inspiration can flow, and creativity bloom.
- This is about collaboration and development, says Tone Aanderaa, who works with both brush and pen.
A new book is in the making. She has much on her heart.
Her Hardanger roots are in Årvik, Kvinnherad and Jondal. Now she travels between Belgium and Hardanger. She feels at home either place. In Belgian Ste.Marie Geest in Brabant-Walloon, about a half hour's drive from Brussel, apple trees dominate the landscape. Admittedly flatter than here. But sheep are grazing the fields there also, and there are hens and a rooster is calling at dawn.
She wants to share with those who have inspired her. In Belgium she has met artist colleagues playing on strings resonnating her own, inspired by the same as her, but giving it different expressions, choosing different roads. These meetings and encounters are like wellsprings for artists.
Dreams have often been a theme in Aanderaa's art. In the charged field between dream and reality there is also imagination. Coupled with the need to create makes for fantastic images.
Castle and spires from dreams have for years been realized through paint and brushes. Now she travels to a land of castles and church spires whichever direction you look.
Her expression is changing. Presently she is more catching impressions than painting a dream. And yes, she confirms, she is presently working more imressionistically.
- I am curious what will happen after the two exhibitions in Hardanger. Now there is an opening for exchange and collaboration - both between galleries, artists, communes, and countries, says the artist celebrating 20-years anniversary, graciously inviting to inspiring landscapes and encounters between colleagues.

Dreams
create art
Where are the borders between what is and what is wished to be?
Where are the borders between what is possible and not possible?
After visiting the exhibition "Tone Aanderaa encounters Belgium and Norway" borderlines are being moved.
The exhibition project embraces twelve artists each with their own individual expression. Together they create a whole (dream) world.
For they are all pioneering in their own ways. That the jubileering artist makes her dream landscapes real, is one thing. That Arne Bakke Mælen molds wood as if it was soft clay is another example. Anne Hesvik Kartveit's playful and feathery brush is almost impossible to grasp.
Ingunn van Etten's paintings seem often to glow back at you, whether they are in blues or the golden colours. Many of her symbols are also found in Aanderaa's paintings. There are f.ex. more birds than before, and more feathers. While van Etten has houses, Aanderaa has castles and spires. They have similarities, but each has their own individual style - they look good together.
Johild Mæland has evolved from traditional rosepainting - via making her own mark on it - to creating an iconography based on traditional painting and mordern art. She combines history and heritage with today, and is exciting and innovative in her choice of motives and composition.
Both Aud Bækkelund's objects in currugated cardboard and Solfrid Aksnes' collages are inspired by Olav H. Hauge and Geirr Tveitt, in connection to the big celebration of the two harding artists last year. Also van Etten's paintings belong among the Hauge-inspired.
And it fits well with what the guests from the continent has brought with them. They are also inspired by music and landscape. Parallelled with music and fairytales, colours and movement. Here is a forest of people, here is an orchestra of colours and atmosphere.
The most incredible is architectural art of Ingrid Siliakus. She cuts in paper, contructs advanced buildings which become sculptures mirroring themselves - or houses appear as pop-up art between two covers. The artist that must have a particularly well developed sight is Marc. Pointillism (small dots/points of colour which optically blend and become a motive) is the style, tool is pen and chinese ink, motives are insects, faces, birds or animals - or something else. But you have to look carefully. It is not always (only) what you think you see.
Aanderaa's anniversary exhibition is a project hosted by to places; Hardanger Kulturgalleri in Herand, and Hardanger Folkemuseum at Utne.
The carpenters at Utne has by simple means recreated the big hall into a castle for you to enter. The gate is decorated by Aanderaa in her characteristic style. The first thing you encounter when you enter through the gate is a triptyck - an 'altarpiece' with an Aanderaa motive.
At the Kulturgalleri at Mælen it is the landscape and the architecture which frames the exhibition.
The main artist show both the old and the new Tone. Now she catches impressions, more than carefully rendering dreams. And she is strongly influenced by antemensaler and church art. That she is also in a world of tapestries and Flemish weaving is evident from the motives. As in 'Golden Leaf' - a painting which undersigned most certainly will dream about. Perhaps it will become one of the dreams I carry with me....

Tone Aanderaa Encounters....

Min egen opplevelse av nye impulser, et annet kunstnerisk miljø, kultur, historie og landskap, ble noe jeg hadde lyst å dele – at også andre skulle få oppleve. Kunstnerisk utveksling og samarbeid mellom Harding Puls og Reg’Art ble en naturlig fortsettelse";
Resultatet er idag 2 utstillinger:
1. ’Tone Aanderaa Encounters...’ m/gjester fra Belgia
v/ Hardanger Folkemuseum, Utne;
2. ’Belgia Encounters Hardanger’

Reg'Art arbeider aktivt, med bl.a. planer for en ny Kunstakademi avdeling for Universitetet i Louvain-La-Neuve.
